Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament works for a world free from nuclear weapons. We oppose the damage caused by these weapons of mass destruction through their development, testing and potential use. The £billions spent on nuclear weapons could be far better used on tackling hunger and poverty and investing in the things people really need, such as decent public services.

There are still over 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world, and new nuclear weapons research is set to produce more. Britain’s own nuclear weapons programme, Trident, consists of four submarines with a combined total of 225 warheads. Each warhead has more than eight times the destructive power of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, which killed over 140,000 people.

With two ‘Star Wars’ military communications bases right here in Yorkshire (at Menwith Hill and Fylingdales), we play a key role in opposing United States Missile ‘Defence’. Which is, in reality, an offensive system designed to give the US global control of space (as well as land, sea, air and information) and the ability to launch first strikes anywhere in the world without fear of retaliation. It’s continued development is leading to more, rather than less, nuclear weapons.
