On 3rd October, Leeds City Council will be deciding the fate of 70 households in LS26. Property investors Pemberstone want to demolish their homes to build new, more expensive properties – more profitable for the developers, but far beyond the reach of the existing residents, who will be priced out of the area and placed at risk of homelessness.

There is nothing in Pemberstone’s plans to mitigate the destruction of community and risk of homelessness for the 70 low-income, vulnerable families. The waiting list for council housing in the area is over 70 weeks even for those with highest priority.

The new designs proposed by Pemberstone are an insulting high-end imitation of the existing “Airey” homes – a now rare piece of working-class history which needs to be preserved (see Save Our Homes blog for more history).

Since declaring a climate emergency, LCC has a duty to consider the climate impacts of planning decisions; yet the efficient boilers and insulation that Pemberstone have promised for the new houses are upgrades they can – and should – make to the existing homes. The climate impact of redevelopment is far greater than it would be for refurbishment, and will be made worse by the destruction of trees and other natural habitats, and increased traffic due to the influx of more affluent residents.

To add insult to injury, residents have been informed that they will not even be allowed to speak at the hearing. This silencing of residents is outrageous when the developers already have a massive advantage of power and resources to put their case.

Please add your voice to the protest outside the Civic Hall on Thursday, and let Leeds City Council know that its residents prioritise #peopleNOTprofit.
