Welcome to the first Fab Lab!

This one-day Introduction to Wood Machinery will teach you the foundations of how to use the most common larger woodworking machinery, so you can be more ambitious with what you can achieve, harnessing the possibilities of a woodworking machine shop rather than just the garden shed.

During the day you will spend some time learning about proper workshop etiquette, and how to operate each machine accurately and safely.

We will then machine some pieces of rough sawn waney edged larch to produce a highly finished, unique wall shelf unit that you can take away.

Price: £140 full price, £120 concessions. £5 optional extra hot lunch. (Pay on the door for optional lunch, please contact us for concession ticket).

All the teaching on our FAB LAB: Introduction to Machinery will be taught through the medium of creating your own project. Each student will get the opportunity to take several lengths of rough sawn larch timber, and go through the entire process of grading, selecting machining, planing, jointing, and creating a highly finished set of bookshelves which you can take home at the end of the day.
We will move fast so a basic level of competency when using hand power tools and hand tools is required, as this course if for developing woodworkers who want to learn to work in a well-equipped workshop environment.

Who’s it for
This course if for everybody who has a basic level of competence with using hand power tools and manual hand tools. We will develop those skills into the use of all the core woodworking machinery to enable you to create production lines, batch processing work; for faster working and efficient use of time.

What we will cover
We will cover basic health and safety when using the key items of woodworking machinery, including:
Table saw
Band saw
Electric mitre saw
Planer Thicknesser
Jointer
Thicknessing sander
Routers both large 1/2” router and 1/4” trim router

Along with understanding a range of manual processing techniques for using power tools to get a great finish on your work, working with various kinds of sanders and planers to create a really high class finish.

You will work to produce a set of bookshelves which you can take home at the end of the day.

Participation in this masterclass will also enable you to come and use the workshop in our Open Workshop session 6-9pm on Wednesday nights with no further induction required, as your basic competence with the major pieces of equipment will already have been assessed. (Details of Open Workshop in the Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/140841483226755).

Structure of the day
We will start the day at 9am with tea/coffee and a health and safety talk, introduction to the protective equipment we will use and a grounding in workshop etiquette and co-operation whilst using the space. Things go quicker in the workshop when we work in teams, so in all likelihood we will form pairs, and will help each other when batch processing our timber, as well as having that extra pair of hands for when we are assembling and gluing up the joints.

Who is leading/ about the tutor
Philip Marken has been a fabricator and maker for 15 years, specialising in multi material manufacturing using wood, metal and fabric. With a first love for furniture (followed closely by big canvas creations), Phil is eager to share his knowledge of designing with sawn timber from the sawmill and making it into highly finished, but beautifully natural looking furniture, each piece with its own individual twist.

What to bring/wear
Please bring clothes which you do not mind getting dirty, you will be using glue and there will be a lot of sawdust. Long hair has to be tied back for safety so please bring a hair tie. All the essential PPE will be provided. We will have two breaks during the day, one for tea at mid-morning, and one for lunch.

Thank you all for the interest and please let us know if you have any more questions about the content of the course or what you can expect to learn. If you have a particular element which you would like to be covered, it’d be great to hear about it before hand so that we may be able to include it.

We look forward to seeing you in the workshop!
