World Car Free Day on Sunday September 22nd provides an opportunity to people to experience the benefits of living without the pollution , noise and congestion of traffic on the roads.

Zero Carbon Headingley is holding a car free street fair on North Lane to celebrate.

The street fair will include stalls from a wide range of environmental groups and local community groups as well as attractions for children and food stalls. The aim is to increase awareness of the benefits of reducing private car and HGV use in Headingley, both to local people and to a wider audience through effective publicity of the event.

Carbon emissions from transport now account for one third of all UK emissions (BEIS figures for 2018) and the related impact of poor air quality on health is an increasing concern. It is well known that air pollution on the A660 in Headingley is high, with the monitored Air Quality Index generally showing a higher level of particulates than in the city centre. This street fair will help increase public awareness of the need to reduce private car use in the city and the many benefits of reduced road traffic.

Zero Carbon Headingley is a non-profit making campaign group supported by Headingley Development Trust and Zero Carbon Yorkshire.
