Reclaim The Night Leeds

Asserting women’s right to feel free from the fear of rape and sexual violence.

Details:

We march to demand justice for rape survivors.

There are an estimated 47,000 rapes every year, around 40,000 attempted rapes and over 300,000 sexual assaults, and yet the conviction rate is the lowest it has ever been. Only 5.3% of rapists are convicted, and when they are the sentence is often disproportionately low to the crime.

A survey found that 95% of women don’t feel safe on the streets at night, and 65% don’t even feel safe during the day. Women negotiate the threat or reality of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment daily, and this must change.

The Reclaim the Night march is a means for women to use their collective voice and empower themselves against the threat of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
