Fresh from its sold-out world premiere at Leeds International Film Festival in November 2018, this short documentary of and by Yorkshire-based Commoners Choir sticks two fingers up at the corporate side of arts funding.
Join Boff Whalley and the combined force of three unique and eclectic choirs from Leeds, Manchester and Stockton as they take Newcastle’s Great Exhibition of the North by storm. Along the way, they battle unethical sponsors and tricky four-part harmonies to perform a specially commissioned song in an unforgettable live performance outside SAGE Gateshead in June 2018 – a song that seeks to define the North through its history, geography and sense of cultural identity.
The screening will be accompanied by True North performed live by all three choirs on the stage of the cinema – only the second and possibly the last time they will be singing it together.
There will also be a short set from the choirs, a Q&A with Boff and an exhibition by artist and author Jill Gibbon.
