Buses across West Yorkshire are at breaking point. Long delays, extortionate fares, fragmented services, dysfunctional ticketing, axed routes – passengers across the region are getting a raw deal whilst companies like First profit. But public anger is growing, and people are fighting back – with ACORN branches across the country leading campaigns to Take Back Our Buses.
Campaigning has already made a real impact here in Leeds, pushing franchising on to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Agenda. But we need a long-term campaign that can build the power to hold local authorities to account and stand up to the transport profiteers to win real change.
Franchising would enable us to rein in the market, capping prices, introducing an integrated ticketing system, protecting essential routes – so we can properly regulate and invest in our transport network. But we want real democratic control, so buses serve the needs of workers and communities.
So join us for an afternoon of exciting strategy and campaign planning as we get organized to Take Back Our Buses!
