Usdaw members who support the National Shop Stewards Network have called for a day of action over the job cuts and store closures being carried out by high street chain Debenhams. As part of it’s re-opening plans on Monday 15th June, the company have made redundant over 1,000 workers, both at head office, but also it’s restaurant staff in stores across the country rather than continuing to keep them furloughed until its was possible to re-open cafes.
With the company having shutdown it’s entire Irish store network and evading any responsibility to pay those workers proper redundancy pay as well, we say the company should be taken out of the hands of corporate bosses and administrators who have continually mismanaged it and brought into public ownership to save jobs.
We will be holding a socially-distanced protest on Briggate outside the Leeds store and encourage supporters of the National Shop Stewards Network elsewhere in the country to do the same. Bring masks & gloves.
