There are over 160 blue plaques around Leeds commemorating famous people, buildings or events – but very few of them make our queer history visible. For the first time in this city, Leeds Civic Trust are developing a trail of rainbow plaques (http://leedscivictrust.org.uk/whatwedo/heritage/blue-plaques/leeds-rainbow-plaques/) in time for Leeds Pride, which will mark places significant to well-known LGBT+ history. But what about our unsung heroes, our personal victories, the secret sites of queer resistance that didn’t make it into the history books? Taking inspiration from York’s DIY rainbow plaques (https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/rainbowplaques/), Queerology invites you to create your own removeable cardboard plaques, marking the queer spaces that mean the most to you.
Drop into Aire Place Studios any time between 12:00 and 17:00 to make your plaque with Kit Heyam and Luna Morgana. If you can’t make it, feel free to leave a message on the wall of the event and we’ll make your plaque. Check out the Instagram archive of York plaques if you need inspiration!
Once all the plaques are made, we’ll be plotting a trail on a map that we’ll then upload via social media. We’ll then work together to display the plaques around the city during the weekend of the Leeds Pride, before the parade.
