‘How to be a Dyslexic Artist and Other Stories’ pt.2
An opportunity for dyslexic adults ages 18+
9 Weekly sessions at The Tetley, Leeds
How to be a Dyslexic Artist!? is the first course of its kind, a multi-artform, nine-week programme for adult dyslexics of all skill levels and backgrounds. As well as the weekly presentations and practical workshops there will also be one to one support and review sessions. The course provides a unique opportunity to take part in workshops and discussions around personal experiences of being dyslexic as an inspiration to develop new creative artworks for public display on the Participation Floor at The Tetley.
The course is delivered by artist / consultant ?Benedict Phillips? and his team, who bring with them a wide range of skills including, sculpture techniques, creative writing, costume design and production, photography and performance art. The team will work with you over weekly sessions to help you create a personal manifesto, props and costume to generate an ‘alternative persona’ resulting in a studio based photographic portrait.
The sessions will reflect on dyslexic experiences and attributes that are often interpreted as negative or just misunderstood. Together, we will share and explore the strengths and skills that we have developed in opposition to standardised ways of thinking and doing. We will also explore our strengths and individual solutions to the complex questions asked of and by dyslexics in our text-dominated society.
