Militarism and the Climate Crisis are inseparable

The US military is the largest institutional consumer of oil in the world, with higher carbon emissions than most countries.

Armed forces emissions have traditionally been excluded from international reduction targets, while our continued dependence on fossil fuels drives conflict and war in the Middle East and beyond.

The interdependence between nuclear weapons and civilian nuclear power, in terms of skills and infrastructure, means our government continues to champion expensive new nuclear at the expense of clean renewables.

Spending £205bn on new nuclear weapons will only exacerbate the real threats we face. But for the arms industry an unstable climate is yet another opportunity, as governments strengthen borders and clamour for militarised solutions.

We need to break this cycle. Climate justice can only come with radical demilitarisation.

After a short break we’ll have our annual review of the year at Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and elect our Coordinating Group. All welcome to help us shape the coming year.
