For many of us working on making change there is constant battle to get good media coverage for our organisations. Often we work alone or in small teams – and there’s no training out there specifically aimed at helping progressives improve their impact.

Who’s it for?
This training is aimed at grassroots activists and people who want to use media coverage to change the world. We want to equip you with the skills to get coverage for your organisation, promote your campaigns, write promotional materials, and communicate your message clearly and effectively.

On the day we will cover:
* How the broadcasters work – and how pitch stories to them.
* Communications and Framing. Effective framing, how to avoid common framing pitfalls and reinforcing our opponents’ frames; storytelling – because people relate to stories, not stats; language use and cutting out the jargon; the audience and talking to “Marge” (a tool for clear, impactful communication).
* How to prepare for an interview and how to ace it. Top tips on different styles of interview.

Outcomes from the Training
After completing the training we aim to get all participants to a place where they can comfortably and confidently prepare for and take on a range of interviews, clearly communicate topline messages and begin to shift the debate on the issues they work on. Participants will be able to frame effectively, use stories to good effect and work-up their own messaging.

About the trainers
The training will be run jointly by NEON (the New Economy Organisers Network) and the New Economics Foundation. It is a shorter version of their New Economy Spokesperson Network programme which has been designed to substantially boost the number of progressive, diverse voices in the mainstream media. It provides training, coaching and PR booking support for people working on a range of issues, from migration rights to climate change, inequality to public health. So far they’ve had over 650 high-profile media bookings, including Newsnight, LBC, Channel 4 News, BBC 5 Live, Today, Sky News and ITV News.

Accessibility
The training includes breaks, an hour lunch break and a Pay As You Feel lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Please email maia.kelly@leedstidal.org if you have any requests for other things we could do to support your learning and make the training more comfortable!

How to Apply
Please submit your answers to the form attached before midnight on the 28th of February.

There are 20 places available on the course. As we expect this training to be oversubscribed, places will be allocated to ensure diversity and an even spread of topic areas. If you are offered a place, there is a suggested donation of £10-40 to help us cover the costs of facilitators time, venue and refreshments. We encourage wealth-sharing to allow the workshop to be accessible to everyone. No-one will be turned away for lack of funds. There are a couple of free places for those unable to donate financially.
