Join us for a whilrlwind day of learning by doing – when we will embark on a creative design process to create our own toolboxes. Every participant will walk away with a completed toolbox which they can take home, both as an example of the woodworking skills they have learnt and to use for storing their growing tool collection.
The day will begin with a safety talk and an introduction to the tools we will be using, and a basis in their safe set-up and usage.
Following that we will get straight into the workshop and begin templating our designs, using the most common machinery like the table saw and chop saw to dimension our timber, before exploring the best fixing methods to joining the whole toolbox together.
Lastly, we will have a break whilst the glue dries, and then spend a couple of hours using sanding and finishing tools to put a really high quality finish to really show off the hard work.
Making these toolboxes will teach a whole host of vital carpentry skills, including accurate measuring, setting up machinery for best accuracy, cutting accurately with hand tools, choosing the best screws and fixing methods for the materials, what types of glues to use for best strength and then how to use hand sanding and power sanding to put a really great finish on the final piece.
Participants who want to take part should tell us in advance of any injuries and disabilities, so we can cater for all abilities. We also require that participants wear strong footwear, and if they have long hair, bring a hair tie to tie their hair up whilst in the workshop.
All instruction and personal protective equipment will be provided, and we will guide you through the learning every step of the way. The ratio of instructors to learners will never be more than 1:8 and we hope to see lots of you there!
