Make a Zine is a fun and approachable hands-on workshop aimed at someone who has a desire to produce a small edition of books that are unrestrained from the usual mainstream publishing topics. It is run by printer and zine maker Joanna Wilkinson who will give participants an opportunity to experience the thrill of making their own zine in a day.
What experience do I need?
This one day workshop is aimed at the complete beginner or someone who would like to use their existing printmaking or bookbinding skills to produce their own zine.
What will I make?
Participants are encouraged to mix and reinterpret a range of materials such as letter stamps, stickers, collage, typewriters, scissors, glue, a sewing machine and a photocopier. Everyone will be shown how to fold, collate, bind and reproduce their zines and, in the true spirit of self-publishing, swap with others on the day to take home a bundle of tiny do-it-yourself creative tomes.
Who is my tutor?
Joanna Wilkinson has been making small books since she was a young girl where she began constructing books for the dolls in her dolls house, drew comics for family members and wrote/illustrated teen magazines with her sisters. This passion has continued into her adult life where she realised that self-publishing (making your own books) could cover every imaginable subject matter whilst using a huge range of anarchic materials and ephemera.
You can find Joanna on Instagram: @joannawilko
Do I need to bring anything?
Materials and equipment will be provided, however, please bring collage cut outs, patterned papers, in fact, any ephemera and any images that might be useful to use or just inspire.
Refreshments including hot and cold drinks and nibbles will be provided but you may wish to bring some lunch along with you.
If I can’t attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
