Award-winning folk musician, dancer and composer Hannah James debuts her never-before-seen brand new duo with outstanding French cellist Toby Kuhn. Hannah and Toby only met this summer but their musical chemistry was immediate. They instantly formed a duo and the interplay between these two master instrumentalists would have you believe they have been playing together for years.
At our Awake Arise gig in December 2018 an audience member was waxing lyrical about this duo. A quick chat with Hannah then a few emails later we booked them as our first gig for 2019.
BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Hannah James (Lady Maisery, Songs of Separation, Jigdoll, Kerfuffle) has been beguiling audiences for over fifteen years with her breathtaking performance style. Marrying flawless accordion playing and beautiful vocal stylings with inventive foot percussion and clog dancing, she is regarded as one of the most innovative and entertaining performers on the UK folk scene. This will be her fourth appearance at Live At All Hallows, in 2017 she appeared as part of Coven, and also did a double headliner gig with Grace Petrie, and in 2018 she brought Arise Awake: A Christmas Show for Our Times to us, with her band Lady Maisery, and the duo Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith.
Toby Kuhn is a trained classical musician whose encounter in 2015 with the vast world of folk music has led him in even more directions, in the form of collaborations with extremely talented and dedicated artists such as (but not limited to) Daniel Wall, Sofia Högstadius and Matija Solce; a particularly rewarding experience is his ongoing participation in a string quintet with fiddler and singer Kate Young, with whom he is performing around Europe.
The Live At All Hallows team are excited that Hannah is coming back to us and bringing us a new musical friend in Toby.
