Learn how to graft apple trees using the tantalisingly named ‘whip and tongue’ method. This is a traditional knife method that gives a high success rate and a strong union. Lewis McNeill was taught by renowned Nurseryman Nick Dunn of Frank Matthews back in 2010 and has gone on to successfully graft over 1000 trees. He has even successfully taught school children this method to establish 60 school orchards – so if children can use the knife proficiently, you probably can too!

We’ll learn about the history and theory of grafting and have plenty of time to make practise cuts before creating two trees per participant to take home (with a range of varieties and root stock to choose from to suit your situation).

The course will take place outdoors with a basic shelter – please come dressed appropriately. Although hot drinks and snacks will be provided, you should bring a packed lunch (there are some good shops accross the road at Manor House and a restaurant next door if you’d like to buy something).

Feedback from previous courses:

“I took part in your one-day grafting course in Hackney a few months ago and am happy to report that both my apple grafts have been successful!” Flavia Watts, Friends of Thornton Heath

“Thank you so much for the course, it was brilliant. It was the most instructive and useful day as well as being a lot of fun!” Josaphine LeGrice

“An impressive number of grafts we did that day have taken, you made it look so easy!”
Russell Miller, Tree Muskateers
