Speaker: Dr Shabana Mir (American Islamic College)

How do Muslim American undergraduate women construct identity strategies when Islam, Muslims, and Muslim women are stigmatized as associated with foreignness, terrorism, oppression, and victimhood? How do Muslim women in particular encounter gendered Islamophobia in the liberal spaces of college campuses? How do they develop agentic responses, working toward decolonizing campus spaces and working against institutionalized and cultural Islamophobia? Dr. Shabana Mir will discuss these questions using data and findings from her ethnographic research that began soon after the 9/11 events. A few signed copies of the book which forms the basis of this talk, ‘Muslim American Women on Campus’, will be available for purchase at the event.
