To resist homophobia and transphobia, LGBT people must reclaim our history – and our history of resistance.LGBT people in many countries have made important strides towards equal rights at work and in society. But it took decades of struggle to win these rights, and the picture remains contradictory.
Most people’s attitudes, especially those of young people, have become less homophobic and transphobic. But bullying, harassment and attacks are still common. Transphobic hate crime has tripled in the last five years, while prosecution rates have dropped. More than a third of transgender employees said they had to leave their job due to discrimination in 2016.
Stonewall reported that 8 out of 10 trans school and college students had self-harmed and 45 percent had tried to take their own lives. The right wing media is also on the offensive against transgender people. Socialists must stand unconditionally with all oppressed people fighting for their rights – and recognise that transwomen are women and trans men are men.
Come to this meeting to discuss how trans people have fought as part of the wider movement for sexual liberation, and why trans rights are a demand we should all support.
