30 years ago, the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, was reduced to ‘iron filings’ by the 18 million strong mass non-payment movement of the poll tax. Even sleepy traditional Tory towns had hundreds strong demonstrations outside courthouses to defend non-payers, and resist them being sent to jail.
Eric Segal, whose new book on the struggle against the Poll Tax was published earlier this year, was a leading figure in the anti-poll tax movement, Secretary of the Kent Anti-Poll Tax Federation, and was one of the several hundred people who were jailed for non-payment of the Poll Tax, will be our speaker and discuss the lessons of the battle against the poll tax for today.
