SUMMARY:What is a "Just Recovery" from and beyond the pandemic? (by Leeds Tidal)
DESCRIPTION:As we adapt our lives to the global pandemic\, many questions are now emerging about what world we are creating\, or want to create in the time to come. \nOn Saturday 20th June (11.00-1.30pm) Leeds Tidal will be bringing together some the UK’s most progressive thinkers for an online event starting to share ideas about what a “Just Recovery” for the economy could look like\, and how we build it here in Leeds and beyond. \nCome along to hear from brilliant thinkers\, including: \n\nNonhlanhla Makuyana [Decolonising Economics\, Wreched of the Earth\, Land In Our Names] – Nonhlanhla is a facilitator\, organiser and artist focused on reclaiming erased histories of marginalised peoples as a central part of creating transformative social change. They are the co-founder of Decolonising Economics\, a grassroots collective working to build a new economy movement that is rooted in racial justice principles and decolonial struggle.\n\n\nJonty Leibowitz [Centre of Local Economic Strategy\, CLES] – Jonty is a senior resercher working on ‘community wealth building’ and leading CLES’ environmental justice work. He is the author of ‘Towards a Local Green New Deal’ (forthcoming May 2020)\, a paper about how local authorities must anchor post-COVID recoveries around the green economy.\n\n\nWill Stronge [Autonomy] – Will is co-director of Autonomy\, an independent UK think-thank focussing on issues related to the future of work. Will is also a Researcher in Politics and Philosophy at the University of Brighton\, an editor of Georges Batailles and Contemporary Thought\, and co-authoring the upcoming book ‘Post-Work’ with Helen Hester.\n\nContributions from local groups will also include the Racial Justice Network\, ACORN\, We Own It\, Leeds TUC and Leeds for a Green New Deal\, who host discussions in the later workshop element of our session. \nQuestions for the event \nWith lots to focus on\, our main discussion themes will include: \n\nHow can we collectively heal from pandemic\, financial and climate crisis?\nHow could new principles like those from 350.org help guide our actions? (https://350.org/just-recovery/)\nHow do we learn from global ideas and apply them locally in our city?\n\nFormat \nThe interactive webinar will be 2.5 hours\, and will include presentations and an interactive q&a with our guest speakers. There will also be break-out sessions with local groups. The session will include a comfort break\, and optional energiser activities to keep us engaged throughout the session. \nAccessibility \nthe event will take place on Zoom.
