SUMMARY:Talking Heads: Leeds - Cradle of Innovation - Still Rocking!
DESCRIPTION:Speakers and discussion exploring society today – every second Thursday of the month in the Claremont room (except in April when it will be on a Wednesday in the Shire Oak hall!)\, with discussion continuing afterwards in Assembly Bar + Kitchen. \nLEEDS: CRADLE OF INNOVATION – STILL ROCKING! A discussion led by Dr Rachael Unsworth\, Urban Geographer. \nFor centuries\, Leeds has nurtured economic\, social and cultural innovation. Leeds people brought in new products and processes during the industrial revolution and are leading the digital revolution of today. Over the centuries\, Leeds has also been the focus for many social and cultural innovations. But how has innovation changed over time\, and what are the implications for the future of our city and for our health and wellbeing? The talk and discussion will be led by urban geographer Rachael Unsworth and will take its inspiration from a new book she is co-authoring with local historian Steve Burt: Leeds: Cradle of Innovation. The book showcases engineers\, commercial and social entrepreneurs\, scientists and technologists and contributors to the visual and performing arts. It promises to be a fascinating evening. \nRachael will be joined by people who are blazing the innovation trail in Leeds today: \nAbhay Adhikari – who leads the Urban Sustainable Development Lab and the global Digital Identities programme powered by Google News Lab. \nRich Daley (aka Fish Percolator) – full-stack software developer\, member of USDL and Duke Studios \nCarole Clark\, Ageing Well Officer\, Older People\, Long Term Conditions & Cancer\, LCC – who will say how innovation will help to make Leeds the best city to grow old in. \nThis event is held in conjunction with Leeds Civic Trust. \nSuggested donations of £3\, but no-one turned away due to lack of funds. \n
