SUMMARY:Linton Kwesi Johnson: conversation and reading for #DavidOluwale
DESCRIPTION:The globally acclaimed British-Jamaican poet and activist Linton Kwesi Johnson will be interviewed by Dr Emily Zobel Marshall\, and he will read some of his poetry\, including poems from the 1970s that drew attention to David Oluwale’s death. Dr Marshall teaches LKJ’s poetry in her classes at the Leeds Beckett University’s School of Cultural Studies and Humanities. This event will provide an occasion to hear LKJ reflect on his own life as a young black man in Brixton\, London\, during the time of the hounding of David Oluwale\, his decision to join and campaign with radical black organisations\, and we will discuss his development of a vernacular poetic form to promote social justice. \n[Our photos shows\, L-R\, Linton Kwesi Johnson\, Arthur France MBE (member of the original RememberOluwale committee) and Caryl Phillips (Patron of RememberOluwale) at the Oluwale Now! event at Leeds University organised by Professor Andrew Warnes in 2016 © Max Farrar] \n
