SUMMARY:Iraq War Whistleblower Q&A Leeds
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to have Katharine Gun visit us this Saturday\, for a Q&A with local peace campaigners. For those too young to remember\, Katharine was a GCHQ translator who blew the whistle on US spying on UN security council members in the run up to the Iraq war. \nHer revelations caused a diplomatic storm internationally and many at the time felt it would make an invasion of Iraq impossible – sadly we were wrong. She lost her job and was arrested under the official secrets act for the disclosure (which she freely admitted) and faced years in prison. After a year long wait she appeared at the Old Bailey\, but in a dramatic climbdown the then Attorney General Lord Goldsmith had all charges dropped. \nHer story is depicted in the book “The Spy who tried to stop a war” and will soon be the subject of a movie in which she’ll be played by Keira Knightley. \n
