SUMMARY:COMPASSION & KINDNESS\, LEEDS TO KENYA – Mama Na Mtoto Mother and Baby Project - Kindness Festival Week
DESCRIPTION:Leeds midwife Anita Jones worked with NGOs in Kenya for some years but recognised that some aid projects aimed at reducing mortality from AIDS\, etc.\, lacked a holistic approach and were much less effective than they could be as a result. Since 2015 her group\, Mama Na Mtoto (Swahili for Mother and Baby) has supported the training of local women in a rural district in Kenya as ;midwifery support workers\, alongside a raft of other interventions aimed at tackling the causes of the problems of teenage pregnancy and the other multiple issues that combine to raise perinatal mortality in the region to tragically high levels. \nAnita’s project has the potential to greatly improve the life chances of thousands of women in this very challenging region. We hope that by promoting this inspiring example of international compassion through the Festival\, we can raise its profile and help it to gain the financial support it needs to fully realise that potential\, and to build an enduring link between the community of Leeds and one that so much needs our support. \n
